Climbing shoe recycling
Did you know that only in the Netherlands, roughly 80.000 kg of climbing shoes are thrown away every year? We're going to stop this from happening, by collecting the worn climbing shoes at Monk Rotterdam and Outdoor XL in Dordrecht. We will start the research on how to recycle them, because as of now there is no existent shoe recycling in the world. We're talking now with climbing shoe manufacturers to start using this granulate in new climbing shoes to close the loop.
But, before you put your shoes in the recycling bin, see if you can resole them. Resoling is better for the environment and your wallet than recycling the shoes. If you've just got a small puncture in your shoes they can still be resoled, up to a few times. When the hole is too big like shown below (the structure of the shoe is broken and you can see your big toe), they can't be resoled anymore.
- Any climbing brand: Saltic (send them to Germany) or Restday
- La Sportivas can be resoled here if you live in the Netherlands, they also do other shoe brands
- Scarpas can be resoled here if you live in the Netherlands, they also do other shoe brands
- Five-Tens can be resoled here if you live in the Netherlands, they also do other shoe brands
Who are the climbing gyms who are taking the lead in joining us in our recycling program? Here they are:
